‘Smoking Inside’ is the Sara Twomey Gallery’s first exhibition. Occupying disused space, the exhibition is housed in an empty retail space in the heart of the Docklands, used as both studio and gallery, the first in a series of roaming exhibitions.
The exhibition is a polemic on painting, placing together different genres with transient and studio objects, curiosities playfully interact with the hung work, weaving together different themes which have evolved both from the situation of the gallery and the relationship between the curator and the artists, allusions to conversations past and present are intimated at by text art which is thread through the more formal work.
The hang is playful and irreverent, blurring the boundaries between formal curation and the creative process, with the exhibition extending into the artist’s workspace. The gallery and studio have remained open during the hanging period, letting the pubic engage in the behind the scenes activity of organising an exhibition, emphasising the central theme of the exhibition of making art inclusive. It is a show that nods to the rules and then puts them aside bringing together the work of the self-taught, the trained, new and internationally established artists, creating a sharp challenge to the vagaries of the art world, looking to the past as well as the future.
